CHELSEA HOPKINS
MODERN LOVE

Moth and butterfly wings are covered in tiny colourful scales. They look like minuscule abstract artworks in their own right, with the scales creating a variety of patterns and visual effects.

These Lepidoptera affinitas paintings are based on many different sections of these wing-scales and the feelings of community, love, connection and relationships. All these different beautiful parts of our lives coming together, overlapping, relating to each other as an imperfect, fascinating, vibrant, impactful whole.

'Lepidoptera' is the scientific name for the order of insects that includes butterflies and moths. It literally means 'scaled wing' in Ancient Greek. 'Affinitas' is Latin, meaning relationship or community. Many scientific names use Ancient Greek or Latin and binomial nomenclature (two part scientific name) so it felt appropriate that I do a version of the same to name these artworks!
