HILARY HERRMANN
CRITTERS
I live on a rural property surrounded by pasture, trees, shrubs, flowers and an abundance of birdlife and wildlife, these critters, are an enormous source of joy to my life.
My process is solitary. Only escapee chickens and my companion dog disrupt. I spend my days constructing stories, distending, unfolding thick oil paint. I work quickly, my brushes, hands, following my thoughts. I paint heavy layers of narrative.
My practice tells stories. It combines seen and unseen worlds. I conjure characters, creatures and throw them into dark or into light. Sometimes the dark haunts. Mostly light prevails.
I paint on my verandah looking out over this curious world.
