Bringing home flowers and objects for arranging is one of my favourite parts of the painting process. Family life can be noisy and frantic, and I find that the moments of quiet contemplation when arranging my painting subjects and then painting my still life pieces help me to move through that noise.

The compositions of my paintings continue to reflect my search for space and stillness. The painted areas extend on to and over the sides of the canvas, stretching the composition beyond the boundaries of the painted surface. Shadows cast by objects also extend beyond the boundaries of the canvas, suggesting another world outside the edges of the painting.

My paintings depict consideration of the details in the everyday, offering endless moments of quiet and calm.

Biography

Samantha Dennison paints from her home studio in Albany, on the South Coast of Western Australia. She makes contemporary realist still life oil paintings of treasured objects and flowers she collects from neighbours, friends and her general daily surroundings. Her quiet and considered paintings are concerned with space, seasonality and changes in light as the year progresses.

Samantha studied Art Education at Edith Cowan University and worked as a high school Art Teacher from 1990 until 2006. In 2003 Samantha held her first solo exhibition of landscape oil paintings at Gallows Gallery, WA.

In 2012, Samantha, her husband and three young daughters swapped life in the city of Perth for living in Albany, and since then Samantha has concentrated on still life painting.

Samantha has been a Finalist in the 2018 Eutick Memorial Still Life Award and the 2016 Albany Art Prize.
