SOPHIE WITTER

I live in Hobart Tasmania with my partner and four children. I began painting as a means of self- preservation while working as a social worker and raising my children. Many of my works have been created amongst domestic chaos and the curious eyes and fingers of my children.

I am interested in the classic themes around portrait, still life and landscape painting and interfacing these with my own experiences and imaginings.  My art practice uses colour, line and pattern to depict the ordinary and aesthetic qualities of our everyday objects and spaces.

I try and capture a moment or feeling in my works, that is at once familiar and new.  Since COVID, I like many people have been spending more time at home, contemplating, working and raising families. In this context, I have also been painting, often off my kitchen bench. So now my kitchen has made a way into my art. I have also become more interested in doors and doorways as gateways to the inside and outside world. Having to stay home has made me think about, experience and depict interior and domestic spaces in new ways.
