ZOE GREY
SOMETHINGS ALWAYS MISSING

I make paintings about my home, Marrawah, a remote coastal town on the western edge  of lutruwita/Tasmania. I grew up there, in a house on the oceans shore with my family. We lived closely with the rugged landscape and the wild weather that is so unique to that part of the world. I have always felt a strong connection to my home, to the memories it
holds. The experiences I’ve had in that place underpin my sense of self. Now, I am based in nipaluna/Hobart, so the paintings in this body of work are made through distance - memory and familiarity my painterly guide.

Marrawah is a place I know intimately, but each time I return home, it offers me something new - a particular bend in
a tree I haven’t noticed, or the low autumn light hitting a patch of lichen in a different way. I paint to capture my experience of that landscape, to nurture and unpack my feelings for that place. My connection is evolving, the place changing, so the job will never be done. I acknowledge the original and ongoing custodians of the land this work stands on, the kamilaroi people, and pay my deepest respects to elders past, present and emerging who care for and connect to this country. I also pay my respects to the traditional owners of the land this work was made on, the muwinina people and the land this work is about, the peeraper people
.

Zoe Grey is an emerging contemporary painter who grew up in Marrawah, a raw and remote place, on the far Northwest tip of lutruwita/Tasmania.
